Residents affected by last month's building collapse in Clinton Hill had a chance to speak out Wednesday night during a town hall meeting where some criticized the city over its response. NY1's Anthony Pascale filed the following report. All the debris left behind by last month's building collapse has for the most part been cleaned up. But those who used to live behind where plywood boards now stand say their lives are still a mess.
"I'm living with my in-laws in a one bedroom apartment, there's six of us in there, and it's getting me, it's getting to me now because I went from a comfortable place that I had to nothing. I lost everything," said Jose Diaz, a displaced resident.
Diaz lived on the block for 14 years. His apartment was torn down after the building that collapsed next door caused his building to become unstable. He says after the Red Cross help ran out, he looked to the city for help, only to be offered a shelter or public housing.
"I've been a member of this community for 32 years, I grew up here and I am not going to settle for less. I want what I had," said Diaz.
Sheila Nunez, a displaced resident who suffers from MS says she too needs a better option.
"It wasn't our fault this happened. My husband is a hardworking man, he can pay a rent, we want an apartment, we don't want to be placed in a shelter," said Nunez.
Displaced residents vented their frustration at a town hall meeting set up by City Councilwoman Leticia James. James says it's time the city starts treating the residents like victims.
"What they need is emergency housing. What they need is more consideration, more compassion," said James. "What they need is for Red Cross and the City of New York to treat them more humanely."
It's still unknown what caused 493 Myrtle Avenue to collapse. The Department of Buildings has said its investigation is focusing on whether the owner properly maintained the structure and if heavy rains played a role.
