Macy's Previews July 4th Fireworks Show
The Macy's Fourth of July fireworks display is expected to be bigger and better than last year's show, as it lights up the sky in a different location than usual.
In honor of the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson's voyage down the Hudson River, the show is moving across town to the West Side.
Organizers say this year's show has an "American River" theme and will feature more than 40,000 fireworks, like the ones seen above, set off from six barges between 24th and 50th Streets on the Hudson River.
"Biggest show that we have ever done in terms of continuous boats," said executive producer Robin Hall. "We have six boats together, 25 blocks of fireworks. It's about seven times bigger than the show in Washington, D.C."
Show designer Gary Souza said the Hudson River is a bigger and more expansive venue than the East River, so height is a key element.
"Over eight times more product bursting above the 600 foot level, the fireworks are going to be spectacular," said Souza.
The show will start at about 9:20 p.m. Saturday and more than 1,500 shells will explode each minute.
The best places to view the fireworks are Piers 54 and 84.
