Archbishop Timothy Dolan's appointment as the head of the Roman Catholic Church's New York Archdiocese became official Monday.

Pope Benedict XVI anointed and placed a pallium vestment on Dolan and 33 other new archbishops in a Vatican City ceremony.

The pallium is a band of white wool decorated with black crosses. It's a sign of pastoral authority and a symbol of the archbishops' bond with the pope.

The ceremony in St. Peter's Basilica marked the feast day of Saints Peter and Paul, a national holiday in Italy.

Thousands of pilgrims from New York and Dolan's former home of Milwaukee made the trek to the Vatican to be in attendance.
