A vigil was held in Columbus Circle on Friday to show support for protesters in Iran and to keep attention on the uprising there.
The event was organized by Amnesty International and the Student World Assembly to support the Iranian people's right to peaceful protest.
Supporters said they want protesters in Iran to know their voices are being heard around the world.
"The main thing is that we show that the international community is listening. That we're aware of what's going on even if the government is trying to suppress their voices, and that we're standing with them," said a demonstrator.
Demonstrators condemned the violence in Iran following the contested presidential elections two weeks ago.
At least 17 Iranian protesters have been killed in clashes with security forces.
