The Straphangers Campaign's annual “Shmutz” Report, released Thursday, found that subway cars were cleaner in 2008 than 2009.

According to the survey, 57 percent of subway cars were clean. The 2007 survey found that only 50 percent of cars were tidy.

The cleanest cars, the survey says, can be found on the Number 7 line, where 84 percent of the cars are clean.

The R line had the fewest number of clean cars, with just 25 percent making the grade.

The Straphangers Campaign said that while it is pleased with the improvements, there is still a lot of work to be done.

"People should expect cleaner subways than they are getting," said Gene Russianoff of the Straphangers Campaign. "It's positive, but it's still 43 percent of the subway cars are either moderately or heavily dirty.

New York City Transit says its line general manager program has since been expanded system wide, putting the agency in a better position to deploy cleaning resources where necessary.

The findings were made from 2,200 subway car observations between September and December 2008 on all 22 lines.
