The New York City Landmarks Commission is calling the plan to redevelop Saint Vincent's Hospital "fundamentally appropriate," while asking for some changes to the project.

The plan calls to convert the hospital's current Seventh Avenue site into a residential housing complex.

The project includes construction of a 218-foot residential tower, but the commission says it would like to see the building slimmed down. Preservationists say they remain concerned the building is too big and will destroy the character of the historical neighborhood.

The commission has already approved plans for a new hospital tower across the street.

A vote on the residential complex is expected next month.
