Some City Island residents are rejoicing after the neighborhood's fire company has been allowed to stay open.
Ladder 53 on City Island was one of the fire companies that had been slated to close on July 1st.
The fire company has been subject to overnight closures since January. But the budget deal reached yesterday will restore normal operations at the firehouse.
City Councilman James Vacca says the budget deal will save lives.
"City Island led the way to the victory we have tonight," said Vacca. "The determination of these people on City Island not to see this ladder company close really culminated this fantastic victory here today."
"We counted the number of wooden houses, things close together. You know, it would've been horrible things happening here," said resident Barbara Dolensek. "We're really excited that they understood, the council understood what the issues were."
The budget deal will also restore normal operations at Engine 161 in South Beach, Engine 271 in Bushwick, and Engine 4 in Lower Manhattan.
