With the session clock ticking for State legislators in Albany, the issue of gay marriage has one Brooklyn community divided over their senator's undecided stance on the issue. NY1's Amanda Farinacci filed the following report. The Popular Food Deli on Flatlands Avenue is just down the block from the office of State Senator John Sampson. NY1 stopped by the neighborhood Saturday and asked residents hanging out outside the foodstore what they think about Sampson being undecided about how to vote for gay marriage.
"It's a real touchy subject, I guess he might be dragging his feet depending on who he's representing; it's a difficult situation, said Brooklyn resident Victor Rivera.
"He's probably not making a decision because it's what the voters might think of him and he lose those votes so, it's a touchy situation with that, if he vote the wrong way he might not get reelected," said Brooklyn resident Benjamin Williams.
Sampson is one of nine State senators who has not made up his mind on the issue. But many of his constituents NY1 talked to are very much decided.
"I feel that he should vote for gay marriage; me being a gay woman myself it would be really great if I would be married freely without me going through all the issues that people living the life has to go through," said Brooklyn resident Danalisa Ward.
"God don't want that so that's why I'm not believing," said one Brooklyn resident.
There were also plenty who said while they personally don't support gay marriage, they don't have a problem with it being legal in New York State.
"He's gotta vote with his heart and it's just right and I can't put anyone down in the public. What you do in your bedroom is your business," said Brooklyn resident Lester Straker.
Residents say whether they agree or not with whatever Sampson's decision on gay marriage turns out to be, they'll continue to support him because he's done a lot for their community.
