I can't really hold back on this topic. I believe the same-sex marriage bill should be passed. This is not a matter of religion. Same-sex couples are not asking to get married in the Catholic church, or in any other church for that matter. They are asking to be legally recognized by the state, and to have the same legal rights as heterosexual, married couples.
This country is based on the foundation of separation of church and state. For example, when a heterosexual couple get married, they have a ceremony in their church for religious purposes, and get a marriage license for legal purposes. It's the same situation when a heterosexual couple get a divorce. They get a legal divorce, but in the eyes of God, that marriage must also be annulled. So, homosexual couples are not asking for the church ceremony, they're asking for the marriage license. I just don't understand why this is so hard to digest.
Yesterday, Albany lawmakers weren't sure if a bill to legalize same-sex marriage had enough support to pass. So today, NY1 decided to ask. An informal poll of all 62 State Senators revealed 20 would vote to pass the bill, 27 would not, 10 are still undecided and 5 wouldn't tell us their position.
The bill would need 32 votes to pass. Several of the undecided or undeclared Senators are from New York City, including Hiram Monserrate of Queens, Andrew Lanza of Staten Island and Carl Kruger of Brooklyn. What would you tell them?
How would you like your State representative to vote on legalizing gay marriage? What does it tell you that 10 politicians are still undecided on this issue? Will your elected official's vote on same-sex marriage influence your vote for him or her in the future?

UNFORTUNATELY, WE STILL LIVE IN A HOMOPHOBIC SOCIETY. THE BILL TO LEGALIZE SAME-SEX MARRIAGE WILL PROBABLY NOT BE PASSED BECAUSE OF THAT. IF JESUS WAS TO COME BACK TOMORROW, HE WOULD BE ASHAMED OF HOW PEOPLE JUDGE OTHER PEOPLE. CATHOLICS SHOULD KNOW THAT JESUS IS A FORGIVING GOD. THEY SHOULD FOLLOW IN HIS FOOTSTEPS AND NOT JUDGE PEOPLE ON WHO THEY LOVE AND WANT TO BE WITH FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES.
I say that anyone who wants to get married should be able to so. I will vote against my senator if he votes against it.
Larry, Far Rockaway
It's the 21st century, why is this still an issue? If two people love each other they should be allowed to marry and be miserable like the rest of us. I don't understand why all these anti-gay marriage people say that god doesn't approve of it. While i may be an atheist, doesn't god supposedly love everyone regardless? If that doesn't sway them, how about this: People who get married spend money on catering halls, limos, food, etc. That money would do well to serve this city.
Grant City, Staten Island
us downstaters are outnumbered (legislatively by rubes & apple-knockers) these folks cant even give directions to us city mice. Its not a hot-button issue for our family and last evening on the subway a crazy mental patient was preaching the gospel about this very subject: how the bible states that when man lies with anything other than a woman, including beasts it wouldnt be good and is an abomination/praise jesus/lord now im kinda sure that there were folks on that train that didnt worship Jesus anyway and that if we legislate based on rubes and crazies were in trouble.
I want my Senator to vote for Gay Marriage but she will because her brother is a Big Queen.
Again it's about equality, not sex, not religion. How could gay marriage affect any marriage? It's like saying eating fast food affects other peoples health, who are vegans. The senators should vote to pass the bill considering how quickly this country is changing.
It won't hurt them or anyone It might even give NY a boost in the economy. Weddings, License etc. Why in the world would they vote against it.
Get real the time is now it's all about equality. They make plenty of money for the community and could loose it if they vote no.
Vote no and that should be the end of it.
WHY NOT LEGALIZE GAY MARRIAGE? IS IT THAT THOSE WHO DO NOT WANT IT SAY NAY BECAUSE OF SOME MORALITY ISSUES? I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANOTHER PERSONS HAPPINESS, ESPECIALLY IF THAT PERSON IS NOT ENCROACHING ON MY HAPPINESS. HETEROSEXUAL MARRIAGES HAVE BEEN TANKING FOR DECADES, SO, WE CAN'T POINT TO THAT AS A MODEL OF WHAT REALLY SHOULD BE.
MORALITY HAS BEEN ABSENT AT TIMES IN GOVERNMENT AND RELIGION, SO, WE CAN'T POINT TO THESE AS MODELS EITHER. TREAT MARRIAGE AS A FRATERNITY OF SORTS AND NOT AS AN INSTITUTION. I SAY, WELCOME TO THE FRATERNITY, IF YOU ARE HETERO, BE HAPPY, AND IF YOU ARE THE OTHER, WELL, BE GAY! SPREAD THE LOVE AND LOSE THE NONSENSE.
JOE, BAY TERRACE
I believe that we all should be happy we are all = how dare any body try to tell us we cant marry the one we love that we are wrong for loving the same sex why do we have to travel so far to get marry when we can get marry where we live. I don't think that fair. everybody keeps talking about god yes god we do trust but god does not want us not to be happy. look what going on now. people are losing jobs people are going to jail man why cant we love our same sex. Im in love with my girl friend and were in engaded and we do want to marry we should have the freedom of choice to marry who were in love with no relationship not perfect every body argues but that the beauty of love we work it out

I support gay marriage because gay people share the same responsibilities as all other citizens; therefore they should have the same rights. Additionally, as I feel few people understand in this matter, they do not ask for church sanction of their union, (after all, churches disagree as to what they recognize as marriage and rightfully so); but as a matter of civil rights, they should have state/civil recognition of their marriage.
an earlier caller suggested that she was worried about the children, but did not mention what happens to children whose "straight" parents divorce.
I would totally support my elected official should they vote "YES" to Gay Marriage. So many people use the Bible as a reason that Gay Marriage is wrong. However, if we truly believe in "Love Thy Neighbor" we would not judge. Just a reminder, the Bible was written by MAN in a time when laws were very specific and many, many of the freedoms we enjoy today were taboo.
I don't understand how people can use "God's law" or the bible as a reason for no gay marriage when we don't stone people anymore, we don't consider our wives as property, we eat shellfish and we allow divorce. Is the Bible a Chinese menu where we just pick out what we want and ignore the rest?

The NYS Senate should pass the marriage equality bill. The argument that state bans on same-sex marriage do not violate gay peoples’ civil right to marry because everyone, including gay people, is free to marry someone of the opposite sex is faulty logic. Such “pseudo-reasoning” disregards the reality that when it comes to selecting a life partner, people make choices that are consistent with their sexual orientation. Limiting marriage to only opposite-sex couples forces gay people either to forgo marriage altogether or to act against their true nature, i.e., their sexual orientation. Both of these choices are potentially harmful to the well-being of gay people, as it would be to anyone given a choice between giving up their pursuit of happiness and acting in a manner inconsistent with their personal identity. While it is true that no one in this country has an unlimited right to marry the person of their choice, there is no valid secular argument to justify limiting the right to by gender. The arguments being made in this regard are based mainly on religious beliefs which are, in fact, no more valid that anyone’s subjective opinion about anything. Moreover, civil rights should never be subject to the “will of the people” or “tyranny of the majority” because people vote their subjective opinions which are heavily influenced by their personal prejudices. One reason why we have a court system is to decide when majority opinions trample on the civil rights of minority groups. It is my hope that the judges of the US Supreme Court, who will ultimately settle this dispute on a national level, will be able to set aside their personal prejudices a little more effectively than the general public, and overturn all state bans on same-sex marriage because they deprive gay people of due process and their fundamental right to marry in a manner that is consistent with their personal identity.
I say Vote YES on the Marriage Equality Bill, and I've already emailed my State Senator.
People seem to forget that this is a bill to legalize marriage between CONSENTING ADULTS. No one is forcing anyone into a marriage they do not want.
If two people of the same sex want to raise a family protected by the same legal rights as straight couples, why on earth would you say no to that?
They should vote in Favor of same sex marriage, anything else is Discrimination!
Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn
As i said yesterday, there are other more important bill before the assembly that need attention, than the vote to make me legitamte in any union. I am from bushwick/bed-stuy and velamette or serrano only needs us when they need us. I should support the leaders not the followers in albany. I do not vote because of one issue.
I don't believe that the people should vote for same sex marriage. If my state senator votes for it, I will not support him.
Trixi-May from Bushwick
The undecided senators are nauseating. They are hoping to be wooed by either side and holding out for the best deal. It's horrendous that they are trading political favors over people's rights.
And, I have listened to all of the people who have called in to the show over these few days and there reasons have one thing in common - they cling to tradition. If we all thought like that there would be no invention, no creativity, and no innovation.
As a gay young man, I would like my State representative to vote on legalizing gay marriage like if it was a marriage between a men and a women. Because, all there is on a gay person is not just a sex orientation but most important a human being.. If those 10 politicians are still undecided on this issue is because they are homophobic and there intelligent is blocked completely from a reality view. People got to learn to respect others because gay people don't harm like the other people do to them.
Eric, Webster, Ave
I think that it is disgraceful that this isn't a human rights issue and not a gay issue. All those against and on the fence should be ashamed of them selves. Remember we voted you in we can vote you out. To think that some of the other states that do not have the gay population that we have and they have voted it into law. It isn't a matter of religion. A religious ceremony is just that a ceremony. unless you have permission from your state you are not married in the eyes of the LAW. Separation of church and state people!
We want equal rights nothing special about that. Anything less is not EQUAL. If the law state we are all created equal isn't it time for it to be true.
Jim Upper West Side
In the beginning, there was "Adam & Eve, not Adam and Steve." Marriage as the "Word" tells us is a "blessed union" between 2 people of the opposite sex. Sexual orientation is a "personal decision" and taxpayer dollars must not be used to condone such. I thank my representative Senator Shirley Huntley for taking a stand and saying "NO" to same sex marriage.
I am in favor of NY Senators voting for gay marriage. Everyone needs to be hugged. Everyone deserves equality in eyes of the law.
This whole thing is a joke has far has I'm concern, if this person won'ts to marry or have a civil union who has the right to say no??!!. Because if this is what they want and it has no affect on your life why would you say no?, It can only be you just don't like it. And if this is your only reason then you have no real reason except for your hatered
If the bill said it was domestic partner I would ask the senators to vote for it. But Same sex marriage is still taboo with some people.
I am in agreement with those senators-mostly Rep. who oppose same sex marriage.
I am 22 years old. I am a lesbian who loves my women I will love to hold her hand and marriage. We live in Brooklyn. We are very happy together. We want you to pass this bill I think it is right for every body to be = How dare any one that stands in our way to tell us NO that we are wrong and not allowed to be happy with who we are? Even if you don't pass it you'll still see us holding hands you'll still see us fitting in. We all will stand together with a smile to show everybody that we are the same. Don't any body know by the end of the day were all brother and sisters. Don't any body know that god forgives all of us for what we do and what we think and how we say things. God wouldn't want us not to be happy. God loves us all. God wants us to love our self and be happy with our self. If your not happy then how are you going to make other happy. Misery loves company so why stay around it why have drama in our lives make it easy make it fair lets us marry.
Oh, I see that the New York times and NY1 is finally doing their job and putting the pressure on State Congress to reveal the names of gay marriage opposition after going head hunting for our first black majority leader Malcolm A. Smith and going on a witch hunt for David Patersons head after he dissed their dear white liberal royalty Queen Kennedy.
P.S. There is no such thing as god... So I do not see a problem with same sex marriage.
my name is jessie i am from Brooklyn
I believe that we all should be happy we are all =
how dare any body try to tell us we cant marry the one we love that we are wrong for loving the same sex why do we have to travel so far to get marry when we can get marry where we live. I don't think that fair. everybody keeps talking about god yes god we do trust but god does not want us not to be happy.
look what going on now. people are losing jobs people are going to jail man why cant we love our same sex.
Im in love with my girl friend and were in engaded
and we do want to marry we should have the freedom of choice to marry who were in love with
no relationship are perfect every body argues but that the beauty of love we work it out and there a lot of women and man who are married but for the wrong reason. and I wont get into that because it ant really my business but if they dont pass this in 5 years or maybe sooner you will see us all together as one
why should we be separted by straight people and we all should be a family and accept the fact that no matter if you pass the bill or not were still going to be gay and love it.
At this point, it should be framed as an economic issue. New York already recognizes same sex marriages performed elsewhere – voting in favor of the bill is simply a vote to keep the $ here in New York.
But on the philosophical side – Mildred Loving may have said it best: The Government ought not impose the religion of some upon all.
The US Supreme Court has already ruled that marriage is a civil right, in Loving v. Virginia. That case basically legalized interracial marriage, and while it was controversial at the time, in retrospect it was clearly the right thing to do. Eventually, same-sex marriage will get a similar case, and people will look back years later and realize how silly all of this debate is. It's about equality, and denying one group of people what the US Supreme Court calls a right.
If you want to protect the religious aspects of the word, that's fine. But, separate is NEVER equal. Don't want people of the same sex to marry... use the word "civil unions" to describe ALL marriages, hetero or homosexual. Use "marriage" only in a religious context, but have everyone be equal under the law.
This law should absolutely pass, and I am hoping my state senators (Skelos and Onorato) change their minds and support it.
