The Democratic National Convention formally announces the party's presidential candidate by having the candidate placed into nomination by one or more speeches. Then, during a roll call on the third day of the convention, each state's delegation announces how many votes it is putting forward for each candidate. The name of the vice presidential candidate is also placed into nomination by speeches, but a voice vote is used instead of a roll call.
