The Call Blog: At Gun Summit Near Newtown, V.P. Biden Says "America's Changed"

By: NY1 News

Have something to tell us at The Call? Drop us a line at thecall@ny1.com and we'll post it to our blog.

All the e-mails we received tonight are posted below, but I wanted to highlight of few, as they are in line with my beliefs on the issue. To see the full remarks from these viewers, you can scroll down. But these are the lines that struck a chord with me...

Michelle: "I don't believe the Constitution, which was written at a time of great lawlessness and gave people the right to bear arms for their personal protection, can be taken literally today."

Tom: "The 2nd amendment is out of date and meant to defend against a government of missiles and drones now. Nonsense. Guns are only for war. NRA are clueless and living in 1920."

Dominic: "Amendments are called amendments for a reason -- the Constitution sometimes has to be amended to reflect the advance of history."

Dee: "Guns are the means to an end... People need to closely read the Second Amendment carefully. It was written when the common weapon was the musket."

Thank you to all of our viewers for taking part in tonight's discussion.

Vice President Joe Biden accused opponents of gun control reform of setting up "roadblocks" to prevent changes to existing laws. Speaking at a conference just ten miles from the massacre at Sandy Hook elementary school, Biden said "America's changed on this issue," and voters "can't remain silent" any longer.

The White House is pushing several ideas, including an assault weapons ban, limits on the capacity of gun magazines, and stronger background checks for public and private transactions. Biden's appearance comes as the National Rifle Association ramps up its campaign against these initiatives. Readers in five key states -- Arkansas, Louisiana, Maine, North Carolina and West Virginia -- will see an NRA ad questioning the effectiveness of the Obama administration's gun control proposals.

Do you feel Americans have changed their opinions on gun control measures in the wake of the Connecticut shooting? Do you support any of the proposals backed by the new White House task force on guns? Are you planning on doing anything to express your support or opposition to these proposed reforms?

Yet another politician that has been around far to long starting off his speech by accusing someone else that goes against their grain to make a point.

I personally don't believe that people have felt that there are roadblocks to prevent changes to existing laws. To me everyone is just following along and in the meantime our amendments are being tampered with. Why is it that if all of these so called politicians that have made a career out of their jobs and have just ignored every important subject that has come up for years and years that should have been put on the front burner in order to take care of the problems to make like easier for us tax paying citizens.
We have people in the white house or in government that know absolutely nothing at all about fire arms.

For instance I live in one of the five boroughs and I have posted many times about the children getting killed night after night and what has been done about it? All of these other poor little soles and there have been many that have died and stories die along with them and so it goes time after time.

On to the next case scenario.

We had a march this last summer with some officials and we were asked will this help and I immediately said no. The reason is it's just another gravy train to latch on to. Just go back and check out all of stats and count how many have lost their lives and how many were wounded since their march against gun violence took place last summer.
These politicians need to start thinking through their causes that they are definitely inflicting upon us and are infringing on our right.

You all know where I stand.

WHEN DO WE START GETTING DOWN TO BUSINESS ABOUT CREATING SOME JOBS FOR US CITIZENS?

I do not think that people have changed their minds. There is a lot of information out there to scare owners in believing that all their gun rights will be taken away.I Still believe in reasonable gun control with background checks and control of automatic weapons .No change of heart here.

The best way to protect our lives and freedom is to ban politicians. They want to ban everything; let's ban them.

ABOUT AMERICANS INCLUDING MYSELF; YES WE HAVE CHANGED OUR OPINIONS ABOUT GUN CONTROL.

I DO SUPPORT THE PRESIDENT ON HIS PREFERENCE OF GUIDELINES TO COMMIT AND COMPARE; THIS AREA WILL BE ADDRESSED FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE PEOPLE. DOING THE PEOPLE'S BUSINESS NOW HAS CHANGED THE PLAYING FIELD. I WOULD LIKE TO RECOMMEND: EITHER DUE DILIGENCE WITH A BACK-UP REVIEW; OR QUARTERLY REVIEW OF MANUFACTURERS WHO HAVE AGREED TO PARTNER WITH OUR GOVERNMENT AND MAKE SURE ALL FUTURE PRODUCTS NEW WEAPONS WITH A INTERNAL COMPUTER CHIP. THE WEAPONS ALREADY IN USE WILL BE SCANNED AND THE SCANNING PROCESS WILL INTRODUCE COMPUTER CHIP MONITORS, WHO HAVE BEEN ABLE TO RETRO-FIT THEIR PRODUCTS. IF IT BECOMES A MAJOR PROBLEM, AS PRESIDENT MAKE AN EXECUTIVE ORDER. MY EFFORT TO EXPRESS MYSELF IN THIS WAY: MORE THAN 2 WEEKS AGO, I CALLED THE PRODUCERS OF THE PROGRESSIVE CAR INSURANCE COMPANY, WHO HAD A COMMERCIAL FEATURING FLO AND HER COHORTS ENGAGED IN A PSEUDO GUN FIGHT USING SOME KIND OF GUN LOOKING OBJECT. I MADE A COMPLAINT, AND STATED THAT THE COMMERCIAL IS IN BAD TASTE DURING THIS PERIOD OF WHAT TO DO TO RELIEVE THE PRESSURES OF OWNING AND OPERATING FIRE ARMS. I DEMANDED THEY PULL THIS COMMERCIAL. AND THEY DID!

I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE ANOTHER COMPLAINT; IF ANY MEMBER OF THE FAMILY RESIDING IN THE SAME HOUSEHOLD, CAN AND IS CHARGED WITH WEAPONS OFFENSIVES, THE ENTIRE FAMILY WILL HAVE TO BEAR THE BURDEN AND ACCEPT THAT THEY ARE ALSO CO-CONSPIRATORS IN THE EVENT OF A CRIMINAL ACT. IN ADDITION, THERE SHOULD BE SOME BUILDINGS FOR REHAB BY THE ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS, CONVERTED TO FAMILY CORRECTIONS DETENTION CENTERS. NO EXCEPTIONS.

Who is truly disputing registering all guns and mandating proper background checks?
I thought this was already the case!! This tragedy has highlighted the flaws in the system, we owe it to the lives lost to fix these problems.

Lee, Gravesend Brooklyn

The NRA is just a money hungry group that will sacrifice the lives of our children for profit.

Ann

First of all, gun control does not work. It only affects law abiding citizens who obey the law. Criminals are people who ignore laws. That's what makes them criminals in the first place. Secondly, the law is unenforceable. If the laws pass, are all the guns simply going to disappear into thin air? Are the police going door to door looking for them into millions of homes? Sheriff departments in numerous counties have spoken up against the laws and said they will not enforce them. Finally, the Second Amendment was put there not for hunting or target practice or even self defense. It was put there so the people could rise up against the government should it become tyrannical. I would like to remind people that rights are very easy to give up but extremely hard to get back. We might not need them but our grandchildren might. I have written my congressman to fight against gun control and defend my rights. I hope everybody else does too.

Danny

I don't believe the Constitution, which was written at a time of great lawlessness and gave people the right to bear arms for their personal protection, can be taken literally today.Clearly, no one needs an assault weapon to protect themselves. I think the NRA should be stripped of its overreaching power and be an advocate of personal responsibility.

Michelle

Logic won't win here. Facts won't win either. This is a battle between the fear of government and the fear of getting shot. As you can see, it's a pretty close fight.

Mr. Rieper is out of touch and people have had enough of guns. This will be acted on. The 2nd amendment is out of date and meant to defend against a government of missiles and drones now. Nonsense. Guns are only for war. NRA are clueless and living in 1920.

Tom in Mt. Vernon

Amendments are called amendments for a reason -- the Constitution sometimes has to be amended to reflect the advance of history. In the 1700s, tyranny was not a far-fetched possibility and modern weaponry constituted a single-shot musket. Repeal the 2nd Amendment (as the 23rd repealed prohibition) to dis-enshrine the right to bear assault weapons, but let states and municipalities decide the legality of owning such lethal tools.

Dominic (Carroll Gardens)

The NRA always says "guns don't kill people; people do." In 1971 I was shot at point blank range with a .22 caliber pistol that was in my husband's hands. The doctors at Yale Trauma Center said it was a miracle that I survived. My spouse had an explosive temper and wanted me gone. Guns are the means to an end.

People need to closely read the Second Amendment carefully. It was written when the common weapon was the musket.

I have sent e-mails to our NY Congressional delegation about the gun control matter. They who say nothing give consent (for the abuses to continue). The NRA should not be allowed to threaten and/or intimidate opposing views.

Thanks for raising this topic.

Dee, Midtown West

I THINK THAT THERE SHOULD BE A REGENTS EXAM AND FINGERPRINTS. GIVEN WHEN A GUN IS PURCHASED. THAT WOULD STOP A LOT OF MENTAL STABILITY. ISSUES. SOLVED.

Khalfani

I'm a very progressive person, but the problem isn't guns up here, places like New York and New Jersey have the strictest gun laws in the nation, we need a better national system to gun laws, the main argument I hear from friends of mine in other states, cars kill people too, if that's the case you should be required to take a written and physical test to show you have an understanding of the weapon you are bought to own, they should also be registered more efficiently as a lot of guns out there are bought without so much as a simple background test, it's ludicrous how the need for better gun laws, outweighs the conservative belief that all weapons across the land shall be banned.

Geoff, East Elmhurst

Obama displays total disregard for the constitution, and threatens he’ll do the same towards the congress if he doesn’t get hi way, and try to do things on his own by executive order.

Off course he wants to disarm the good, legal, gun owner’s citizens – then it’s easier for him to be become a dictator.

Ban all guns. No brainer. Look at Japan and other countries that have strict gun laws.

Am so over it!

I have been shot myself by someone with a illegal gun. Illegal guns are more of a problem than legal owners who have them..Police, sherrif deputies, correction officers, etc which have also commuted crimes..notice when this occurs there is no talk of gun control, they still have the same requirements...the constitutional right to bear arms should not be changed just like their rights aren't as public servants..stronger penalties for illegal acts with a firearm should be mandatory. Mental evaluations paid by the license applicant and FBI check to obtain would help.Life in prison without the possibility of parole or the death penalty may not be a deterrent for all however I' m sure it would be for many! My Thought !
