The Call Blog: Do Con Edison And LIPA Need Sweeping Reforms?

A layer of government is created to advise a layer of government how to handle a layer of government. Sounds about right. Let's hope someone on the chain brings innovative ideas to the table.
How did the power companies respond to Hurricane Sandy? After the storm, Governor Cuomo created the Moreland Commission to look into how the utilities worked to restore power to some 2.1 million customers. Today, the Commission released its preliminary findings and several recommendations.
The report found the State needs to be more active in its regulation of utilities, and suggested State regulators should have the power to revoke a company's franchise. In addition, the report found LIPA to be so incompetent, it suggested replacing it with a private company. What do you say?
How did Con Edison and LIPA handle the power outages from Sandy? Would you welcome more government oversight of these public utilities? Do you fear the cost of infrastructure improvements and increased fines will just be passed on the customer?

I would like to know if the Moreland Commission looked into the explosion in the Con Ed plant at 14th St. and the East River.
Why did Con Ed not shut the plant down before the high tide at 8:00 PM? The explosion was around 8:40.
Were people hurt in that explosion? Was hazardous material released? How much equipment was lost because the plant was not shut down?
The rate-payers deserve to know what happened. Is Con Ed insured or will rate increases pay to restore this plant?
ConEd should change their name to " National Greed" but they still performed 100 times better than LIPA

Warning: Remember what happened to HUD with Cuomo as its head. Expect a similar fiasco with this so- called Ready Commission.
Why did we need a commission to inform the governor about the problem? No one needed to have to inform them of the problems since this has been going on as far back as I can remember. The rates go through the roof and even if we complain someone somewhere is always on the take. This is not the only time that I have had food spoiled because of a Con Ed outage. We live all of this every day and no one cared before, during and after SANDY. Now to save face we once again are asked for our opinion. When do the games stop.
I AS MANY OTHERS DO NOT HAVE ANY CONFIDENCE IN THESE SO CALLED POLITICIANS.
SO NOW IN THE MIDDLE OF ALL OF THIS CATASTROPHE WE HAVE SCHUMER AND GILLIBRAND LOOKING TO CHANGE GUN LAWS.
YOU TALK ABOUT SWEEPING = GIVE ME THE BROOM AND I WILL DO IT GLADLY
Thank you John,
We don't need more regulation. We need total DEregulation and the privatizing of both ConEd and Lipa. What does a politically appointed hack know about generating and transmitting electricity?
