The Call Blog: "Occupy The Corners" Begins Tonight

By: NY1 News

Have something to tell us at The Call? Drop us a line at thecall@ny1.com and we'll post it to our blog.

If you tuned into our show tonight at 9 p.m., you may have noticed we were not on the air. We were experiencing technical issues and were not able to get on the air until 9:30 p.m. Thank you for those who still tuned in, called and watched our New Yorker of the Week. We apologize for not getting on as many calls as we could. Your emails are posted below.

In an effort to “take back the streets” after a summer of escalating gun violence, New Yorkers will begin “occupying the corners” in all five boroughs tonight. The National Action Network is organizing the effort, which will be held from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. for the next four weekends at ten high-crime locations.

"Occupy the Corners" comes the same day Queens District Attorney Richard Brown issued a nine-point plan to combat gun violence. His ideas include using community leaders to foster trust between residents and police officers, and better enforcement of existing gun legislation. What do you say?

Will "strong real-life neighborly support" from the "Occupy the Corners" movement make a difference? What is the best way to foster trust between residents and law enforcement? What ideas do you have to combat gun violence?

Send your thoughts using the link above.

What can I tell you - It's election time. All of this was going on way before this NATIONAL ACTION NETWORK got involved = Why would anyone need this NATIONAL ACTION NETWORK to organize this or anything else for them. Just remember everyone, about the conditions of the NYCHA story last evening that was brought to our attention. We were all appalled by it and this doesn't even include the drugs and the muggings and weapons of every kind. I HAVE NO IDEA HOW THESE POLITICIANS CAN EVEN SHOW THEIR FACE IN FRONT OF ANY ONE OF US. IF I WERE YOU PEOPLE THAT HAVE THE COMPLAINTS ABOUT ALL OF THIS. JUST TAKE A STAND AND HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE AND WE SHOULD NOT HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL ELECTION TIME TO MAKE A CHANGE.

SO I ASK WHY NOW? IT'S SEEMS OBVIOUS TO ME = ONCE AGAIN THESE POLITICIANS JUST DON'T CARE AND IT IS ALL POLITICAL.

DO YOU MEAN TO TELL ME THAT THIS QUEENS DA IS NOT EMBARRASSED TO BE A PART OF THIS.

NEIGHBORS, PLEASE DO THIS YOURSELVES.

MAKE YOUR OWN STATEMENTS ABOUT THE CONDITIONS AND SINCE YOU WILL ALL DO

THIS TOGETHER THEN WHATEVER YOU CAN TAKE CARE OF BETWEEN YOURSELVES THEN JUST DO IT.

IF YOU ALL DON'T DO IT TOGETHER IT WILL BE FORGOTTEN BY TOMORROW.

WE ARE ALL BEING TREATED JUST LIKE ANOTHER SHIP PASSING IN THE NIGHT.

Occupying the corners, the middle of the street, the lamp poles or manhole covers, etc. will stop so-called gun violence. Guns are not violent. Violent people are violent. And they are laughing at these anti-gun campaigns. They know that, no matter what these groups do, they will be able to buy guns.

How many people couldn't get a beer or a shot of bourbon during Prohibition?

Sad to say it, but, I don't think that occupying the corners will make a difference. Some of the shooters may even take pot shots at the participants. The shooters think that they are in control of the 5 boros and some days they are!

What they need to do is to sponsor a GUN GIVE-AWAY NIGHT to lure some of these rats out in public like rats to cheese!

Then have the thugs to walk into a mobile unit like at a health fair and haul them off to ALCATRAZ!

Sorry I guess that would be worse than stop and frisk...oh well!

It is an abominable and abusive practice to make horses pull carriages through the congested, fume-filled streets of New York City. Every time I see these poor animals in servitude I am ashamed to be a New Yorker. Bikers, pedestrians, drivers all have choices. The horses do not. Ban this archaic practice and get New York City into the 21st Century.

Sir, do these areas get special. Treatment from the nypd. Do the karaoke bars and prostitutes in flushing immune to the law, Do the illegals get special treatment. Why hasn't. Your administration focused on these communities. You need to address the above. You could be challenged in the courts. The black and his panic communities are a part of mainstream America. And many of their leaders are accomplished legal scholars. This is not the sixties! your administration, and the nypd needs to focus on the above communities. Or, are they sleeping in bed With them.. and giving them cover.

With all due respect to the good State Assemblyman, New York State's gun laws are already very strong. 80% of guns used in crimes in New York City are NOT from our state. They are from other states. Passing more gun laws in NY won't make a difference. Its well-intentioned...but pointless. We need stronger laws in the other states.
