Police Commissioner Ray Kelly says investigators believe Jason Commisso, 34, is responsible for at least eight violent robberies since January 17.

Kelly says Commisso has more than 30 prior arrests.

All of the robberies took place in the area between 96th and 116th Streets and Second and Madison Avenues.

The most recent robbery happened just before 10:30 p.m. Saturday when a 57-year-old man was attacked and robbed in the elevator of his apartment building on East 97th Street.

Neighborhood residents who spoke with NY1 say the incidents are disturbing.

"I hope they really catch him man he should be put away for life," said one resident.

"Especially when you have a mother or grandmother and you think about them coming home, and it's not safe to come home because they are afraid to now get into the elevators," said another resident.

"Yeah, I think about it, it can happen to anybody," noted a third resident.

Commissioner Kelly says additional impact officers have been placed in the area to beef up the uniformed presence.

The NYPD has also assigned additional officers fluent in Mandarin and Cantonese to the area for community outreach.
