MTA: South Ferry Station Repairs Will Be Lengthy, Costly

The South Ferry Station in Lower Manhattan could be out of service for another three years thanks to Hurricane Sandy.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority says the storm dumped 14.5 million gallons of salt water into the final stop on the 1 line.
Crews will have to rebuild tile walls, replace salt-corroded signal systems and restore third rail equipment.
The MTA must also decide whether to move electronic equipment to higher ground as a precaution against future storms.
Much of the equipment damaged was state-of-the-art, since the station had just been renovated in 2009.
The cost of rebuilding is estimated at $600 million.
