A gun buyback program will be held Saturday in the same Brooklyn neighborhood where a police officer was shot to death earlier this week.
The event is being held at St. Peter's Lutheran Church on Highland Place in Cypress Hills.
Anyone who returns a working handgun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. will receive a $200 bank card, no questions asked.
Those who turn in operable rifles or shotguns will receive a $20 bank card.
"I think to the extent possible, especially in regards to the illegal guns, the ones not even registered with the owner and filed with the police, they have no business on the street. Now a lot of these guns may have in the past been used in criminal activity, and people may not want to dispose of them in the proper way, so this will give us a chance to get these guns off the street," said City Councilman Erik Dilan.
Officer Peter Figoski was shot and killed by an illegal gun Monday morning after responding to a call on Pine Street in Cypress Hills.
