A key witness took the stand Monday in the federal trial of a man whose son admitted to a plot to blow up the city's subway.
The nephew of Mohammed Wali Zazi testified in Brooklyn federal court as a government witness against him.
Prosecutors say the 55-year-old lied to the FBI and destroyed evidence of his son's homemade explosives.
In his testimony, the nephew told jurors Zazi plotted to get rid of evidence and lied to a grand jury to protect his son.
Zazi was arrested in 2010, but pleaded not guilty and denies he knew anything about the plot or destroyed evidence.
His son pleaded guilty to charges he received explosives training from al-Qaeda in Pakistan and sought to attack the subway system before the FBI intervened.
The defense signaled it may call Najibullah Zazi to the stand to rebut the prosecution's case.
