Sex Crimes Officer Testifies In NYPD Rape Trial

By: NY1 News

A sex crimes investigative officer and a paramedic testified today in the trial of two city police officers charged with raping a drunk woman inside her Manhattan apartment in 2008.

The investigative officer described how he got Officer Kenneth Moreno and informed him that he was being charged with rape.

During cross examination yesterday, Moreno insisted he did nothing wrong.

The prosecution played yesterday a secretly recorded conversation where Moreno admitted to wearing a condom, despite denying he and the accuser had sex.

Things got testy during testimony about the recording, when the prosecutor told Moreno he was heard telling the woman she was passed out.

Moreno's lawyer jumped up to dispute that claim, prompting a rebuttal from the judge, telling him to sit back down.

The accused officer also testified he never told his partner, Officer Franklin Mata, what happened in the bedroom.

Mata is accused of being a lookout.

He testified earlier this week that he fell asleep in another room.

Closing arguments could begin as soon as tomorrow.

Both officers face up to 25 years in prison if convicted.
