As a result, lawyers on both sides of the case against Mohammed Wali Zazi are being given more time to prepare.
A federal judge granted their request after meeting with the lawyers who both say the case is "unusual and complex."
Zazi's trial was to begin on December 7. No new date has been set.
He stands accused of lying to the FBI about talking to someone over the phone about whether or not his son was in any trouble.
His son, Najibullah Zazi, is being held without bail in the city.
He is charged with conspiracy to detonate weapons of mass destruction, in an alleged terrorist plot on the city's subway system.
