Defending U.S. Open champion Rafael Nadal is sitting out this year's tournament.

He says an injured right wrist is keeping him from a chance to repeat last year's success.

Nadal hurt his arm on July 29 while practicing on his home island of Mallorca ahead of the North American hard-court circuit.

Doctors told Nadal he would have to wear a cast for at least two weeks and sit out the tuneup matches.

He is the fourth reigning men's champion in the last 45 years to skip the tournament after wining it the previous year.

The U.S. Open starts next Monday in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, and runs through September 8.
