The day before the Yankees and Red Sox begin a three-game series against each other in Fenway Park, the teams pulled off a rare trade with one another.
Boston is sending Stephen Drew to New York in exchange for infielder Kelly Johnson.
Drew is primarily a shortstop, but is expected to play mostly second base for the Yankees.
He could go back to shortstop next year to replace Derek Jeter.
To make room for Drew, New York designated Brian Roberts for assignment.
The Yankees also acquired Martin Prado in a trade with Arizona and claimed pitcher Esmil Rogers off waivers from Toronto.
The Red Sox, meanwhile, sent ace Jon Lester to Oakland for All-Star outfielder Yoenis Cespedes.
Boston also sent starting pitcher John Lackey to St. Louis.
The Rays sent former Cy Young award winner David Price to the Tigers as part of a three-way deal that saw Seattle land outfielder Austin Jackson.
The Mets did not make any deals.
