Knicks Guard J.R. Smith is being suspended by the NBA.

He'll have to sit out five games without pay for violating the league's drug policy.

Barring any appeals, the suspension will begin once he's cleared to join the team.

Smith is currently recovering from knee surgery to repair a damaged patella tendon.

He won the Sixth Man of the Year award last season and helped lead the Knicks to a division title before struggling in the postseason.

The players union had no comment except to say that it looks forward to a resolution.
