New York Mets phenom Matt Harvey is headed to the disabled list.
Doctors at the Hospital for Special Surgery say the young starter has a partial tear of a ligament in his right elbow.
Harvey had swelling of his forearm and some discomfort, and an MRI revealed the tear.
Mets General Manager Sandy Alderson says Harvey will miss his next few starts, but he could be shut down for the rest of the year.
"We're going to do the prudent thing," Alderson said. "We're not going to do anything to jeopardize Matt's future with the Mets. I leave that possibility open only as a tactical matter. I wouldn't expect him to pitch the rest of the season."
If Tommy John surgery is deemed necessary, Harvey could be out well into next season.
