Red Sox pitcher Ryan Dempster, who set off a firestorm by hitting Alex Rodriguez Sunday night in Boston, was given a five-game suspension and an undisclosed fine Tuesday because Major League Baseball says he intentionally threw at the controversial Yankee slugger.

Dempster is not appealing, but claims it was not intentional.

The 36-year-old former All-Star said he felt it was in the best interest of his team not to appeal.

With the Red Sox off Thursday, it wouldn't make much of an impact on the rotation, and that's not sitting too well with Yankees manager Joe Girardi or the team's fans.

"If you suspend a position player three games, he misses three games. You can suspend a pitcher five games, even six games, and they may not miss a start if the off days come into play," Girardi said. "So that's why I think everything has to be taken into account when you make a suspension. Not just in this case. All the time."

"I think it should have been more," said another. "I think for a position player, five days is pretty good, but for a pitcher, he's not even going to miss anything."

Girardi was ejected from the game for vehemently arguing that Dempster should have been tossed.

The Yankees manager was fined a reported $5,000, twice as much as what Dempster was reportedly fined.

Girardi said that Dempster needed to be suspended or else it would be "open season" on A-Rod.

The Yankees and Red Sox meet again on September 5 in the Bronx.
