The City Council approved Wednesday the $500 million plan to expand the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

In exchange, the United State Tennis Association will launch an increased community outreach program and make a long-term commitment to fund capital improvements to Flushing Meadows-Corona Park.

The plan calls for tearing down the old Grandstand Stadium and rebuilding it in another part of the U.S. Open complex.

Louis Armstrong Stadium will be renovated, and Arthur Ashe Stadium's infrastructure will be improved.

There will also be more parking spaces and pedestrian walkways.

Officials said construction will be done during down time between tournaments and take about eight years to complete. ClientIP:,, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
