Fans looking forward to seeing more of Derek Jeter in the Yankees lineup this season will have to wait a while.

The Yankees' captain will miss at least this weekend's series with the Twins.

The Bombers' all-star shortstop felt tightness in his right quadriceps muscle while running to first base in the fifth inning during Thursday's game against the Royals.

He stayed in the game for one more at-bat before being taken out of the game and taken for an MRI, which revealed a grade 1 strain.

It was his first game since breaking his ankle during a playoff game in October.

"I was certainly caught off guard when I got the phone call from Steve Donahue that we're going to pull him from the game," said Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman. "And Derek usually doesn't say anything, so when he said something, you knew it was. He said cramp. A cramp for Derek is something more than a cramp."

Cashman said the Yankees hope to have Jeter back after the All-Star break when they play in Boston next Friday, but he wouldn't rule out a possible return to the disabled list.

The Yankees captain released a statement expressing his hope to be back in playing condition soon.

"It's frustrating. I don't know what else you want me to say. I worked hard to get to the point of rejoining the team yesterday. It's not how you draw it up, but hopefully I'll be back out there soon and help this team win some games," Jeter said in the statement.
