The New York Rangers on Wednesday announced head coach John Tortorella has been "relieved" of his coaching duties.

The move comes just days after the Blueshirts suffered a 3-1 loss against the Boston Bruins, eliminating them from the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

The Rangers managed only one win against Boston.

"Every coach has a shelf life, and I've told every guy that I've hired that at some point in time, this is going to change." said Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather. "In order for our team to move forward in the direction, our goal is to win the Stanley Cup, and we didn't achieve that goal this year, and I had to make the decision. So I did."

Tortorella's history with the Rangers began during a one-year stint as an assistant coach during the 1999-2000 season. He served as head coach for the final four games of that season.

Prior to returning to the team, he served as head coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning, with whom he won a Stanley Cup in 2004.
