Rangers Suffer Another OT Loss, Now Down 3-2 In Caps Series

  • Text size: + -

The good news for the Rangers was that they scored only 53 seconds into the game.

The bad news was that it was their last goal of the night.

The Washington Capitals' Mike Ribeiro scored nine minutes into overtime to give the Caps a 2-1 win over New York in Game 5 of their Eastern Conference Quarterfinal series Friday night.

The Rangers, now in a 3-2 hole in the best-of-seven series, will have to win games 6 and 7 to advance to the next round of the playoffs.

The loss spoiled a stellar night by Henrik Lundqvist, who made 33 saves for New York, allowing only Ribeiro's overtime goal and a second period power play goal by Joel Ward.

Brian Boyle scored the Rangers' lone goal less than a minute into the game.

It was New York's second overtime loss of the series, after losing the second game 1-0.

Game 6 is Sunday afternoon at Madison Square Garden.
