Derek Stepan didn't want the Rangers to go down three games to none.
With the score tied 3-3 and New York down two games to none in their Eastern Quarterfinals series, Stepan poked a Rick Nash pass past Capitals goalie Braden Holtby to give the Blue Shirts a 4-3 win over Washington Monday night at Madison Square Garden.
Tied 1-1 after the first period and 2-2 after the second, the teams exchanged third-period goals before Stepan broke the tie with six minutes remaining in regulation.
The Rangers then withstood a late Washington 6-on-4 power play with the Capitals' goalie pulled to preserve the victory.
Henrik Lundqvist made 28 saves for the win.
Defenseman Marc Staal returned to the Rangers' line-up and logged 17 minutes of ice time after missing two months with an eye injury suffered March 5 against the Flyers.
With the victory, the Rangers can tie the series 2-2 with a win in Game 4, Wednesday night at the Garden.
