The New York Rangers entered the playoffs following a 9-3-1 surge at the end of the regular season.
The Washington Capitals were not impressed.
After skating out to a 1-0 lead thanks to a first-period wraparound by Carl Hagelin, the Rangers gave up three second-period goals in a span of eight minutes to fall to the Caps, 3-1, in Game One of their Eastern Conference Quarterfinal match-up Thursday in Washington.
Henrik Lundqvist saved 27 of 30 shots but the Capitals' second and third goals, coming within 56 second of each other, buried the Blue Shirts.
Game Two is Saturday afternoon in Washington, before the series shifts to New York for Games Three and Four.
