An NBA player on Monday became the first male pro-athlete in the four major American sports leagues to come out as gay.
Veteran center Jason Collins wrote a first-person account posted Monday on Sports Illustrated's website.
The 34-year-old has played for six teams over the past 12 seasons, including the New Jersey Nets.
He was most recently a member of the Washington Wizards but is currently a free agent.
In the article, Collins wrote, "If I had my way, someone else would have already done this. Nobody has, which is why I'm raising my hand."
Support has been pouring in for Collins since news of the article broke, from the White House to NBA Commissioner David Stern to LA Lakers All Star Kobe Bryant.
Collins says he would like to keep playing in the NBA.
