Jets Coach Rex Ryan, Owner Woody Johnson View Next Season As "Another Chance"

After more than a week of silence, Jets owner Woody Johnson told reporters Tuesday that he still wants head coach Rex Ryan to lead the team, and while Ryan said he wanted to "move forward," questions about the team line-up remained unanswered. NY1's Kevin Garrity filed the following report.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — After all the Jets' unrest, two straight seasons of missing the playoffs, a 6-10 record and an unruly locker room this past season and headlines for all the wrong reasons in the local tabloids, team owner Woody Johnson made it clear to reporters on Tuesday that Rex Ryan deserves to stay as head coach.

"I think Rex Ryan is perfect for the New York Jets," Johnson said. "He is just like a New York Jets fan in many respects, you know? He's hard-working, he's really smart, sophisticated."

"I've been given a great opportunity by Mr. Johnson to move forward and like, this is it. This is a new chance for me," Ryan said.

In a jam-packed media room at the Jets' facility, Ryan and Johnson tried to lay out a game plan going forward. Currently the team needs a new general manager, a number of new assistant coaches. For Ryan, he said he needs one more shot to right all the wrongs.

"This has to get done. It's not a question of when, this has to get done," Ryan said. "I've failed to this point but I have confidence in myself and this organization that we will succeed."

The other million-dollar question is whether Mark Sanchez will remain as the starting quarterback. On Tuesday, the head coach and owner set nothing in stone.

"Money, the financial part of it, we'll not have any of the considerations for it. We'll play the play that fits what we do best," Ryan said.

Ryan has certainly been humbled by the negative attention in the past two years, but one thing still has not changed — his bravado.

"We're going to be a dangerous football team, and I can promise you that. I don't know how many wins and all that, I don't know. But I'm going to tell you, you don't want to play the New York Jets," the coach said.

The press conference left many questions unanswered. Who will be the next general manager, who will be the offensive and defensive coordinators? But maybe most important of all, who will be the starting quarterback of this team next season?
