A pair of Rangers players helped two young hockey teams raise money for Sandy victims through a Central Park game on Sunday.

With professional hockey locked out, Christopher John, NY1's http://www.ny1.com/content/174426/nyers-of-the-week--christopher-john--hockey-teammates-organize-game-to-aid-sandy-reliefNew Yorker of the Week, and his team, The Avalanche, hosted a winter classic of their own at Lasker Rink.

They sold t-shirts and memorabilia to raise money for a relief fund started by the non-profit Help USA.

Ranger players Ryan McDonagh and Carl Hagelin said when they heard about the game, they could not pass up the chance to get their hockey fix and help a timely, urgent cause.

"We knew Hurricane Sandy victims were in a lot of need so we wanted them to get the help that they needed," said Christopher John.

"It was great. It was nice to see all the people come out and support the kids. You know, a couple of Rangers came, which is awesome, the kids loved that and it's just great," said Avalanches coach Tom Duhamel.

"It's really inspiring, you know. Kids understand the impact that the hurricane had on so many people and they're really just trying to do whatever they can, play a sport they've grown to love and raise money at the same time. It's a great combination," McDonagh said.

The hockey sporting goods brand CCM agreed to match donations as well.
