A local college student has made history as the first one-armed basketball player in NCAA Division 1 history, and now he's the subject of a powerful new documentary, "Long Shot: The Kevin Laue Story," which is playing in Chelsea.
Kevin Laue may have only one hand, but the gifted basketball player from Manhattan College is the one doing the teaching. Anyone who comes into contact with the athlete leaves inspired.
"I put a lot of pressure on myself to succeed and one is for my father, but I really want to change the world," says Laue.
Kevin is well on his way. After the untimely death of his race car driver father, Kevin relentlessly pursued his dream of becoming a college basketball bar star.
Franklin Martin, who directed the documentary, followed Kevin back and forth from California to New York for six years.
Martin says the take-home message is bigger than sports.
The touching documentary, which is playing at the Quad Cinema in Chelsea, also shows how Kevin's fight for survival started while he was still in the womb. With his umbilical cord wrapped around his neck, he used his arm as a shield.
Due to a lack of circulation, Kevin was born with an arm that ended just below the elbow. He says it was tough growing up as a kid with a disability, but now he wouldn't have it any other way.
Kevin has one year left to play college ball and then he hopes to make it to the NBA.
