New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter underwent surgery Saturday to repair his fractured left ankle, and his recovery is expected to take about four to five months.

Last weekend, the 38-year-old shortstop became injured while lunging for a 12th-inning ground ball in Game 1 of the American League Championship series against the Detroit Tigers.

A CT scan and MRI revealed the fracture.

Jeter's surgery was performed in Charlotte, N.C.

The Yankees say they are hopeful Jeter will be ready in time for spring training.
