Boston Red Sox manager and former New York Mets skipper Bobby Valentine was injured Tuesday in a cycling accident in Central Park, according to the New York Times.

The Times says Valentine was reading a text message on his cellphone when he swerved to avoid two tourists, lost his balance and slid down a hill.

He was wearing a helmet and only suffered minor injuries to his knees and hips.

Valentine acknowledged he should not have been reading texts while riding.

The text message was reportedly from Red Sox player Dustin Pedroia, telling Valentine he would play in Tuesday's game against the New York Yankees, despite a broken finger.
