New Yorkers gathered in front of televisions at bars and offices across the city Wednesday to cheer on the American World Cup team as it defeated Algeria to advance in the tournament.
Landon Donovan's score in the 91st minute of the game gave the U.S.A. a 1-0 win and allowed team U.S.A. to win its group and advance to the round of 16.
The team would have been eliminated with a loss.
"I think it's great. It's the craziest match I've seen," said one fan watching the game from soccer bar Nevada Smith's in the East Village.
"The whole buildup to the fact that we had the goal taken away. We had four or five really, really good chances," said another fan. "We stuck to our guns. The bottom line is we stayed patient. We picked our spots, and we went for the money."
England beat Slovenia to also move on.
Germany beat Ghana 1-0 and Australia beat Serbia 2-1.
South Korea earned a 2-2 draw against Nigeria Tuesday to earn a spot in the knockout stage, finishing in second place in Group B.
Argentina won the group, finishing the first round with a 2-0 win over Greece.
