This week's Time Warner Cable Business Class NY1 Scholar Athlete of the Week is known for her fierceness on the court and kindness off of it. NY1's Anthony Pascale filed the following report.

For Denisa Kamenica, the decision to join New Dorp High School's tennis team as a freshman came easy.

"I immediately got a starting position, third singles, and I felt very welcome," recalls Denisa.

Feeling welcome was particularly important for Kamenica, who moved to Staten Island from Albania the summer before high school.

"It was hard at the beginning, the transition, but with the help from everyone here, I got through it," says Kamenica.

Now, as captain of the tennis team, Kamenica says her goal is to provide younger players with that same support.

"I felt like, as a captain, I should be able to give the new players the same experience that I had," says Kamenica.

"I couldn't have had a better captain for us on the team, she's a natural leader. She works really hard, she motivates the girls to work," says girls tennis coach Francesca McAuliffe.

The senior is also a hit in the classroom, where teachers say she is always motivating her peers.

"She has been an astounding student. She's actually been probably one of the most inspirational students that I have ever met," says English teacher Angelo Caterino.

"I've heard that from Spanish teachers, English teachers, math teachers, just what an amazing student she is, how hard she works, and how she really strives to do the best she can," says Coach McAuliffe.

Outside of school, Kamenica continues to set an example with her many volunteer efforts.

"I've been volunteering for the blood drives, and when Hurricane Sandy hit, I volunteered here to distribute goods," says Kamenica.

"Her smile and her excellent personality has actually inspired so many people," says Caterino.

Kamenica is headed to Penn State in the fall, where she will major in her favorite subject, mathematics.

"I like the fact that it's very precise, there's a solution to everything," says Kamenica.

So, for finding the equation for success on and off the court, Denisa Kamenica is the latest Time Warner Cable Business Class NY1 Scholar Athlete of the Week.

Nominate A Student

The NY1/Time Warner Cable Business Class Scholar Athlete program celebrates student athletes who successfully combine academics with athletics, and also find time for community service. The program, operated in conjunction with the New York City Department of Education, is open to any senior attending a New York City public high school.

Each week of the school year, a selected student is profiled on NY1 and receives a partial scholarship to the school they choose to attend in the fall.

To apply, download and print out the official Scholar Athlete application, then mail it to the address on the form.
