This week's NY1/Time Warner Cable Business Class Scholar Athlete of the Week excels at academics, athletics and the arts. NY1's Anthony Pascale filed the following report.
When Yuan Chen first joined Flushing High School's bowling and handball teams, the senior claims she wasn't quite the star athlete she is today.
"I wasn't very good at all," recalls Chen.
But with a little help from her peers, Chen's skills improved. Now, her coaches say the teams are lucky to have her.
"She's a big asset to the team, not just because of her skills ability but because of her leadership and her kindness," says handball coach Carla Nasso.
"It's nice to always have team support, like someone, even if you lose, you have a team to comfort you and everyone's always supporting you," says Chen.
That same team spirit drew Chen to join the Young Governor's program after school. Working alongside her peers, Chen helped start a community garden and took part in other activities to enrich her Queens neighborhood.
"Working with other people my age and they're from different schools and all around, is just a great experience. Working with people is really nice and to benefit the community is even better," says Chen.
Chen also participates in the school's math club, where her A average has helped the team consistently rank as one of the best in the city.
"The math team of Flushing High School is number one, number two, and number three math team in the senior division in the city of New York in the last 10 years in a row. She's the one who is keeping the banner high," says assistant principal of mathematics Gene Eyshinskiy.
And while Chen excels in all subjects, her favorite is art. She plans to study graphic design when she heads to SUNY New Paltz in the fall.
"She's the kid who, she'll inspire and she'll intimidate at the same time. And as a teacher, I think it raises the level of the whole class," says art teacher Stu Yellen.
"I guess I've come a long way, and it's kind of somewhat as a hobby to me, but I still find it very enjoyable," says Chen.
So, for always being up for a challenge and never losing her smile, Yuan Chen is the latest NY1/Time Warner Cable Business Class Scholar Athlete of the Week.
