Friday's NY1/Time Warner Cable Business Class Scholar Athlete luncheon honored the high school all stars featured this school year. NY1's Priya Desai filed the following report.

These 25 graduating seniors may have diverse backgrounds and interests, but NY1, along with Time Warner Business Class, recognized a couple of things they have in common: their hard work and dedication.

On Friday afternoon, they were honored with a lunch at the New York Stock Exchange for the annual NY1 Scholar Athlete awards ceremony.

"I thought it was really the big scale. It was not what I expected," said scholar athlete Ashley Lau. "I'm really surprised and honored to be here."

Each of the students was featured in NY1's weekly scholar athlete report and received a $1,000 scholarship provided by NY1 and Time Warner Business Class.

"They took advantage of the time and the resources and the support of their family and friends, and they really impressed everybody, and that's why we're recognizing them," said Ken Fitzpatrick, president of Time Warner Cable Business Class.

They were recognized for their academic achievements and accomplishments in sports, from basketball to volleyball, handball to fencing.

The afternoon luncheon gave the student leaders an opportunity to meet their fellow scholar athletes.

"To see all the people who share the same scholarship as you, I feel like it's good to get to know more people, especially a lot of future leaders," said scholar athlete Alex Cai.

Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott attended as a special guest speaker.

"I think NY1's acknowledgment of the scholar athlete really accentuates the positive attributes of our students, and by showcasing them and really having this ceremony just gives them really the respect that they deserve," Walcott said.

The afternoon also included a private tour of the New York Stock Exchange floor.

"I'm definitely very interested in economics, and hope to maybe study business in the future," said scholar athlete Kevin Trimmer. "It's very exciting to actually be where it all happens."

The scholar athletes are all heading to college this fall to continue along their path to success. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
