The latest NY1/Time Warner Cable Business Class Scholar Athlete of the Week, a varsity tennis team captain and student government president, ranks responsibility, leadership, and giving back to the community above all else. NY1’s Anthony Pascale filed the following report.
Roman Shelkov has a strong presence around his school as student government president and captain of the varsity tennis team.
"I guess it’s the self-accomplishment, the feeling that you get," says Roman. "You’re helping people, bringing back to the community."
The Leon M. Goldstein High School senior joined the tennis team as a freshman and became a captain his junior year. During the off-seasons, Shelkov managed the girls soccer and basketball teams.
“His commitment to the school as far as all the after school things he’s involved in, because again, when you’re manager-ing and you’re on a team, everything is after school so commitment is the upmost and just responsibility and leadership,” says boys varsity tennis coach Adrian Buchhalter. “Those are his best qualities.”
When not on the courts, Shelkov runs around his school organizing events for the student body. He organized events to collect clothing and food for Hurricane Sandy victims.
"It takes a lot of responsibility and you’re responsible for all your actions and everything you do,” says Roman. “You are the representation of the school so anything you say does reflect and really depends, so you have to think before you act."
"This being Roman’s last year, I get questions every day," says Assistant Principle Steven Sclavos. "'Who’s going to replace Roman at the school?’ And the answer is Roman is irreplaceable."
Shelkov is getting a full ride to Baruch College, where he wants to study actuary science.
"My math teacher Ms. Dilfanian actually last year advised me that there’s this job that applies to whatever you like do and I searched it up and I liked it and that’s what I want to pursue," says Roman.
"I think that’s right down the path for him and academically he’ll do very well," says math teacher Ray Dilfanian.
So, for his commitment to academics and sports, Roman Shelkov is the latest NY1/Time Warner Cable Business Class Scholar Athlete of the Week.
