This week's NY1/Time Warner Cable Business Class Scholar Athlete is all about teamwork, both on the court and in the community. NY1's Ruschell Boone filed the following report.

Deborah Seok may be an AP scholar and ranked fifth in her class, but she says school isn't everything.

"It's not all about school," she says. "It's never all about the grades and the numbers. It's about giving back to the community, giving back to your school, giving back to your family."

The Benjamin Cardozo senior serves as the vice president of the National Honor Society, where she helped organize various social events for the school.

"What's so wonderful about Deborah is that she's a team player and she's always willing to take on other responsibilities when they arise," says Jackie Kucker, Seok's National Honor Society advisor. "She's just a wonderful, enthusiastic young lady."

Seok didn't start playing volleyball until her freshman year. She served as captain of the juinor varsity team before making varsity her junior year, where she helped lead her team to a PSAL championship.

"Just being a part of a team that was number one ranked in the city, and just being PSAL champions, it was just an unforgettable experience," she says. "I'm never going to forget the last point we scored."

"You want to talk about someone with a warm personality, that rah-rah spirit, somebody who just did anything team first? That was Deborah," says Daniel Scarola, Seok's volleyball coach.

Seok is a visible leader in her youth group at church, where she plays the bass guitar on the praise team. She also serves as a teaching assistant in the summer school and after-school programs.

"She has the determination, she has the intelligence and she has the personality to succeed in whatever she does," says Brigette Brady, Seok's AP Biology teacher.

Seok will attend Cornell University in the fall and is interested in doing research in behavioral neurobiology.

"When you succeed, you just want to keep on doing more because you have that much potential," she says. "So why stop here? You just want to keep going farther."

So, for her commitment to teamwork both on the court and in the community, Deborah Seok is the latest NY1/Time Warner Cable Business Class Scholar Athlete of the Week.

Nominate A Student

The NY1/Time Warner Cable Business Class Scholar Athlete program celebrates student athletes who successfully combine academics with athletics, and also find time for community service. The program, operated in conjunction with the New York City Department of Education, is open to any senior attending a New York City public high school.

Each week of the school year, a selected student is profiled on NY1 and receives a partial scholarship to the school they choose to attend in the fall.

To apply, download and print out the official Scholar Athlete application, then mail it to the address on the form.
