The latest NY1/Time Warner Cable Business Class Scholar Athlete of the Week is broadening her involvement in school while setting the pace for a bright future. NY1's Anthony Pascale filed the following report.

JieJing Li never imagined she would play on a sports team. But the Flushing High School senior joined the handball team to broaden her high school experience.

"I actually made a lot of friends just because of handball so that's really fun for me and not only that I can end senior year really big to me because I've never actually joined any teams before," says JieJing.

Li is not a newcomer to sports though. She enjoys playing volleyball and has been practicing gymnastics for six years in after-school programs.

"She's really funny, has a good personality, very good package, she was smart, she was a good team player, worked well with the other girls," says handball coach Carla Nasso.

Li joined Chess-in-the-Schools as a freshman. Her team placed first at the 2009 National Girls Championship as well as the All Girls National Championship in 2010.

"They helped me a lot because whenever I'm struggling in school, there's tutoring after-school, one on one private tutoring, and then they also have college tours so they showed me which schools that I'd be interested in," says JieJing.

Li immigrated to the United States from China at the age of seven, and has been excelling academically ever since. She participated in the CUNY College Now program where she took various college level classes.

"She is a great student, she's an A student across the board. She's bubbly, effervescent, she's terrific, she's a team player and she's ready and willing to participate in every aspect of class from day one. She's an asset to anyone, that's how good she is," says social studies teacher Ted Broutzas.

"Her personality is just so warm, it doesn't matter what day is it, I'm having a bad day, she's that kind of student that makes me happy," says English teacher Jolie Serrano.

Li will attend City College in the fall and plans to major in education and mathematics.

"I love kids so I thought maybe education and teaching kids math since it's a subject that I love," says JieJing.

So, for her diligence and personability, JieJing Li is the latest NY1/Time Warner Cable Business Class Scholar Athlete of the Week.
