This week's NY1/Time Warner Cable Business Class Scholar Athlete juggles three sports and is a leader in her school community. NY1's Arlene Borenstein filed the following report.

Those who know Destini Torres say she is the ideal role model. The High School for Environmental Studies senior is a three-sport star and maintains an "A" average.

"I always loved playing sports," she says. "When I play sports, it's something that I put my all into. It's pretty much like a release of stress."

Torres captains the softball and soccer teams and also plays basketball.

"Since the first day I saw her, I knew she was special. In fact, just from throwing the ball two or three times, I was like you made the team," softball coach Jose Ferrer says. "As far as intensity is concerned, never had somebody so intense, and she's fast and positive."

"I have to be a role model for everyone around me, not just on the field but also off the field," Torres says. "I have to keep my grades up, not just for myself but to show that to be on the team, you have to keep your grades up."

When she's not leading practices, she volunteers with the National Honor Society and manages the sports section for the yearbook club.

"Destini is probably one of the most social students that I've ever met," science teacher Marissa Bellino says. "She's very kind and warm and wants everybody to feel welcome and part of the school community."

Torres also volunteers at Gouverneur Hospital in the nursing home where her great-grandmother lived before she passed away.

"One of the things that makes her so great is that she's really humble," global studies teacher, soccer coach and yearbook advisor Max Sugiura says. "You'd never know that she was this kind of superstar scholar athlete because she keeps a pretty low profile."

Torres says her mother is her biggest motivator and deserves credit for her high school success.

"She's always taught me that hard work is going to lead you far in life," she says. "I took that to heart."

So for her passion and devotion for sports, Destini Torres is the latest NY1/Time Warner Cable Business Class Scholar Athlete of the Week. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
