The latest NY1/Time Warner Cable Business Class Scholar Athlete of the Week is a spirited leader on the volleyball court and around her school. NY1's Anthony Pascale filed the following report.

Those who know Jessica Kweon say she is not only a strong leader but a spirited one as well. The New Dorp High School senior takes part in numerous activities in her community and it all started with volleyball.

"Volleyball led to one thing and another thing. From volleyball, I joined gymnastics for three years and then me and my friends joined student council from there. Volleyball was my start and it led me to do all these other things in high school," says Jessica.

"She is a huge team player. She constantly wants to practice. She just wants to practice, practice, practice. She takes it upon herself to research other teams to see how they're doing so she knows what players are good, who to look out for," says girls gymnastics coach Jackie Overs.

When she's not on the mats or captaining the volleyball team, Kweon serves as the co-president of the National Honor Society and plans school functions for the student and senior councils.

"She is amazing at rounding our students up, getting them involved, making sure that they stay on task, giving them jobs to do, delegating. She's just really a great, great leader," says student activities coordinator Lisa Murphy.

"You can't do anything by yourself here. I learned that because I used to be super independent and never rely on anyone. And now i realize it's okay to trust other people and rely on them to get something done," says Jessica.

Kweon is currently taking college-level Italian and fluent in Korean. She is a volunteer at the Korean School of Staten Island which she attended until the sixth grade.

"Jessica is an enthusiastic student. She always has a smile on her face. You can tell that she has an innate love of learning," says anatomy and physiology teacher Theresa Kutza.

She is an honor student in the mathematics and science honor program and completed all of the math courses the school had to offer by the end of her junior year. Kweon plans to attend Macaulay Honors College at Baruch in the fall where she can pursue her passion for mathematics.

"What motivates me the most is probably just my future because I want to be successful in something but I'm not really sure right now. But hopefully doing all this stuff will help me find my outlet soon and then that will motivate me to be successful in life," says Jessica.

So, for her energy and passion to learn, Jessica Kweon is the latest NY1/Time Warner Cable Business Class Scholar Athlete of the Week.

Nominate A Student

The NY1/Time Warner Cable Business Class Scholar Athlete program celebrates student athletes who successfully combine academics with athletics, and also find time for community service. The program, operated in conjunction with the New York City Department of Education, is open to any senior attending a New York City public high school.

Each week of the school year, a selected student is profiled on NY1 and receives a partial scholarship to the school they choose to attend in the fall.

To apply, download and print out the official Scholar Athlete application, then mail it to the address on the form.
