The latest NY1/TWC Business Class Scholar Athlete of the Week is shining in the classroom and setting records on the track. NY1's Anthony Pascale filed the following report.
Kevin Trimmer demonstrates every day that hard work goes a long way. The Staten Island Tech High School track and cross-country star captains both teams and is an active Eagle Scout in the community.
"So many different guys throughout the years have been major influences for me and getting to where I am today and I'm hoping to do the same thing for the other scholar athletes who are coming up in the program," says Kevin.
Trimmer started running track in elementary school with his local CYO team and is now a volunteer assistant coach.
"The best way he leads is to be out front and showing the other boys that there's no fear in getting on that starting line. 'Do what I do, come with me, and I'll show you how to become winners,'" says health and physical education supervisor Robert Andrews.
Trimmer took home the PSAL city championship in the indoor 1,600 meter last week. He is looking forward to winning more titles at the state championship in March.
"Definitely a tremendous honor there. The city always has such tough competition and tremendous group of guys competing every week," says Kevin. "I've always been up there, and been one of the top guys, but finishing first in the city is a tremendous accomplishment."
When he is not running, Trimmer plays the trumpet with the school band. He traveled to Japan in 2009 with the Xaverian High School Senior Jazz Band for a cultural exchange program. Trimmer plans to continue running in college while pursuing a career in international relations.
"He's got so much ahead of him and I hope that he gets to work with really good coaches because a lot of the time, they tend to bring it out of you. I'm very excited to see what he's going to do in college, different level of competition, he's going to have so much to look forward to in training, in terms of winning nationals, possibly going to the Olympics," says AP macroeconomics teacher Victoria Finkelshteyn.
"We have a great group of guys always going out there and working hard every single day. It's a real privilege for me to do whatever I can do get them to get motivated and continue on being as successful as they are," says Kevin.
So, for his dedication and leadership on and off the track, Kevin Trimmer is the latest NY1/TWC Business Class Scholar Athlete of the Week.
