The latest NY1/Time Warner Cable Business Class Scholar Athlete of the Week is setting her sights on a promising future while staying focused on her role as a school leader. NY1's Anthony Pascale filed the following report.

Those who know Anastasia Tzanides say she excels in everything she does. The Fort Hamilton High School senior plays soccer, is in the marching band, and serves as student body vice president.

"My parents always told me to give it a 110 percent and to stick to not only what I believe in but what I find fun," says Anastasia.

Tzanides captained the girls varsity soccer team in the fall and led the team to a win in the division championship. She also helped start the school’s lacrosse club and hopes it becomes a PSAL sport at Fort Hamilton before the spring season starts in March.

"Anastasia has been a four year starter which is very unusual, like one of the only kids that I've ever had do that. She's just one of the nicest people, who's one of the hardest working girls I've ever had," says soccer coach Edward Coin.

As vice president, she is responsible for making sure the school's various clubs are running effectively. She also helps students create new clubs of their interest, all while maintaining an "A" average.

"She's the kind of student that other students look up to her, they want to be like her and adults love having her around because they know she is responsible," says AP U.S. history teacher Jennifer Glass.

"Tassa is just incredibly reliable. Whenever I need her for anything, she's always willing to sacrifice her own time," says student activities coordinator Robert Rose.

Tzanides also plays the french horn in the school's marching band and the trumpet at the Greek School of Plato, a non-profit after school program which she has attended since kindergarten.

"We go out there to the community, not only our school community and show them we're from Fort Hamilton and it's a great honor to be part of something like that," says Anastasia.

Tzanides wants to study medicine in college and become a doctor.

"I was always a strong advocate for medicine and wanting to find a cure and wanting to help others. I bring that to my school community but it's something I would want to do for the rest of my life," says Anastasia.

So, for her selfless devotion to her school community, Anastasia Tzanides is the latest NY1/Time Warner Cable Business Class Scholar Athlete of the Week.

Nominate A Student

The NY1/Time Warner Cable Business Class Scholar Athlete program celebrates student athletes who successfully combine academics with athletics, and also find time for community service. The program, operated in conjunction with the New York City Department of Education, is open to any senior attending a New York City public high school.

Each week of the school year, a selected student is profiled on NY1 and receives a partial scholarship to the school they choose to attend in the fall.

To apply, download and print out the official Scholar Athlete application, then mail it to the address on the form.
