The latest NY1 Scholar Athlete of the Week is a dedicated captain of two sports at his high school and finds the time to coach younger players. NY1's Anthony Pascale filed the following report.
Those who know Andrew Eichenholz say he’s a natural-born leader. The Townsend Harris High School senior captains both the boys' bowling and tennis teams and is known for mentoring younger students.
"It makes you feel good that other guys want to be helped in bowling and tennis. Just trying to help the freshmen and sophomores and younger kids to get into the high school community like I got helped when I first came into high school," says Andrew.
Eichenholz bowls in the fall and plays tennis in the spring while maintaining an A average at the magnet high school. His coaches say while he is a competitive individual athlete, he is more focused on the team.
"He knows that he's on team sports, so he coaches along with the coach. He helps out, he will try to motivate, especially in bowling. He's really good at bowling so he's out there, he's trying to give tips and everything," says athletic director Keith Hanson.
When the boys' bowling team advanced to the PSAL championship last November, Eichenholz recorded a 721 series and won the the City Individual Championship. His coaches have high hopes for him at the tennis championship in the spring.
"Last year we had a lot of new guys and he came and helped to really focus and to really just form a team," says bowling and tennis coach Mark Ifill. "At first, we're a bunch of individuals and then we come together, we continue to grow. And I think he's one of the people that helped put the glue so that the individuals become a team."
Eichenholz is a familiar face at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center where he attended various camps as a child. He is now an assistant coach for a youth program and has worked as a ball person at two U.S. Opens.
"It's a really fun experience, becoming part of a family for bowling, part of a family for tennis, part of an academic family," says Andrew.
Eichenholz plans to continue playing both sports in college.
"I just want to thank my coaches. My coaches have helped me a lot in both sports over the years and taking me from where I was at a freshman to where I am now, in both sports and in life. I'm forever thankful," says Andrew.
So, for his leadership and dedication, Andrew Eichenholz is the latest NY1 Scholar Athlete of the Week.
