The latest NY1 Scholar Athlete of the Week manages her time wisely to be a leader in two sports and within her school. NY1's Anthony Pascale filed the following report.

Corinne Birchard credits her success at Curtis High School to her time management skills, which have helped her juggle school and sport.

"I try to get everything done, anything that's due the next day, that's done, so everything falls nicely into place," says Corinne

Birchard is enrolled in a rigorous International Baccalaureate program. She also captains the girls' cross-country and track and field teams. She helped lead both teams to PSAL championships and was named the 2012 Staten Island Steeplechase Champion.

"In a true sense that her time management is astounding she has been able to do it all. Able to run, 102 average, able to do extensive community service work, able to be a daughter to a wonderful family, and also to be a two to three hours a day athlete. All without stress, all without strain," says track coach Joe Sicilian Jr.

Corrine is currently ranked first in her class and is an active leader in the school. She helped create a mentoring program for prospective IB students to help them adjust to the demanding curriculum.

"During their sophomore and freshman years, they can shadow a junior or senior to each class and then we have meetings with the new juniors and seniors where they can voice concerns or ask questions and advice about the IB program," says Corinne.

When not running on the field, Corinne can be found playing piano for the chorus and various school bands. She is currently working on her own compositions in her IB Music Theory class.

"She's an incredible piano player and she's very dedicated, she's here everyday. I can always count on her and she's just a pleasure to be around," says chorus and theater teacher Joanne Walsh-Lopes.

"She is brilliant. And I think that's a really sort of rare thing. You get a lot of smart students in the school, you get a lot of motivated students and it's great when that really comes together as such a positive force. She's one of the students you can really see right off the bat, this is someone who's going to succeed right after college," says music teacher Josh Steinhart.

So, for her dedication to her school and leadership on the field, Corinne Birchard is the latest NY1 Scholar Athlete of the Week.

Nominate A Student

The NY1 Scholar Athlete program celebrates student athletes who successfully combine academics with athletics, and also find time for community service. The program, operated in conjunction with the New York City Department of Education, is open to any senior attending a New York City public high school.

Each week of the school year, a selected student is profiled on NY1 and receives a $2,000 scholarship to the school they choose to attend in the fall.

To apply, download and print out the official Scholar Athlete application, then mail it to the address on the form.
