The latest Scholar Athlete of the Week is excelling in her advanced classes while dominating on the golf course. NY1’s Jon Weinstein filed the following report.
Name the activity and Bianca Mintz is probably a master at it. She’s involved in so many different things at Tottenville High School, but there’s no question that her top priority is her academics. She hasn't missed a day of class since elementary school.
“It's not easy to come in here every day, and I do it because I don't want to miss anything that the teachers are going to say because I'm going to take it all in,” says Bianca.
Bianca is ranked in the top five of her class of more than 900 students. Her weighted average is nearly a 103, and she's not racking up those A+ grades in easy classes. As part of Tottenville's classics institute, she challenges herself with rigorous coursework in Latin and Advanced Placement Calculus.
“You're balancing your music, you're balancing being on a competitive New York City championship team and then going home and having several hours of work and research and so forth,” says Principal John Tuminaro.
Bianca is also a dedicated community servant through her membership in the Girl Scouts. She received the Gold Award, the highest honor the organization offers.
“I was able to collect over 2,500 books for local hospitals, nursing homes, and other needy organizations throughout Staten Island, New Jersey and Brooklyn,” says Bianca.
Not to be forgotten, Bianca is an accomplished golfer. She sports an 11 handicap and was the undisputed leader on Tottenville's City Championship team this year.
“When she gets put in those pressure shots, and her teammates see her hit those pressure shots and make those pressure putts, a lot of the younger girls really aspire hopefully to be her,” says golf coach Demetrios Haronitis.
Bianca isn't sure where she wants to go to college yet, but she does have an idea what she wants to study: either geophysics or textile materials technology.
“I wanted also to be challenged. Geophysics is very challenging subject and then textiles materials technology is so applicable to everyday life,” says Bianca.
So, for embracing every challenge she faces, Bianca Mintz is the latest Health Plus/NY1 Scholar Athlete of the Week
